Feathering My Stitching Nest
Tuesday September 16, 2008
This weekend, I had a specific goal in mind related to my stitching. I wasn't trying to finish a project. Actually, my goal was to create a specific stitching space. I have an entire room dedicated to my stitching supplies and office, but there's just not enough space for a comfortable chair because of the twin bed that has to live in there too. I had been stitching in several spots in the house. Since I am getting more and more dependant on some of my stitching gadgets, this meant that I had to carry them from place to place or go hunt them up when I needed to use one of them.
So, I scoped out all the chairs in the house, and I ended up choosing a comfy brown recliner. It has support for my back and I can put my feet up while I am stitching. Seating was covered so, next, I pulled out a table that has a lovely tapestry fabric cover over a padded top. (I can stick my needles in it without worrying about ruining it! The table is a good height for my Daylight Tabletop Lamp. It is also large enough to hold a stack of my works in progress. I am famous for having innumerable projects going at once. With this table I can have two or three of them at hand.
The final touch - a small box fan. I am hot-natured and having the fan going means I will sit and stitch for longer periods of time. Now that I had all the elements chosen for my stitching space, I scoped out several locations to set up my little stitching nest and finally decided on a corner of the living room where I can see the television. This way I can watch House, Burn Notice, and Clean House while I am working on a project. And of course, all my favorite decorating shows (too many to list!)
After I rearranged the furniture, I tested out my configuration. The first thing I had to do was extend the arm on my lamp so that I had good illumination for my stitching. The Daylight lamp is wonderful because it is adjustable and when I have company coming over, I can lower the arm, stash my stitching in a basket, and no one will be the wiser. Of course, that will only be true if I vacuum up all the orts that have attached themselves to the chair and the carpet.
My stitching spot has already been a big success. I finished two small projects this weekend from start to finish! I have been in a little stitching slump, but now I am back on track and ready to whip out some new decorations for Halloween and Christmas.
