Has Floss or Fabric Irritated Your Skin?

Monday January 19, 2009
I chanced upon Becca's Cross Stitch blog one day when I was searching for something related to stitchery. One of her posts caught my eye. She wrote about how some fabric irritated her skin. Washing the fabric helped alleviate this which made me think it was the sizing on the fabric that was the problem.

I have had problems with needles causing skin irritation, but never fabric. I wondered if any of you had ever had a reaction to floss or fabric you were using for a project. Vote in the poll and let us know about it. Tell us your story using the Comments below.

Hi Connie, I havent’ had any problems with my knitting yarn or sewing fabric, but I usually buy Australian or New Zealand wool, and look for organic fibers where possible. I always wash fabrics before wearing or sewing, especially if they are imported.

As well as Formaldehyde, the strong chemicals used to dye fabrics could also cause irritation, and there could also be pesticide or herbicide residuse on cotton. The life expectancy of an Indian cotton worker is tragically low.

I know at least one knitter who is actually allergic to wool itself. The Australian wool industry is currently working to reduce pesticide residues to comply with tightened EU standards.
