Poll - Would You Stitch With Scented Floss?
Monday March 23, 2009
I recently read that DMC is introducing limited edition range of scented floss. The flosses are divided into three scent categories - Flower Bouquet, Tutti-Frutti, and Delicacies. Each category includes twelve different flosses.
The floss allows you to "enjoy the pleasures of aroma therapy as you stitch your favorite needlework piece" according to the information about DMC 's Secret Perfume Floss Assortment.
What's next - flavored floss?
Personally, I don't enjoy many scents. I have allergy problems. I don't do candles, essential oils, or wear perfume. So, I don't think scented floss is for me. But, what about you? Would you stitch with scented floss? Vote in the poll and let us know. Use the comments section below before you vote to let us know what you think about it.

Absolutely the worst idea since mailing out cards with perfume on them. It would keep me from ever buying any more thread as I am allergic to a majority of scents. A few skeins would contaminate the entire stock!
While I can see their point, I don’t think it’s a good idea. I’d be worried about the chemicals for the scents eventually discoloring the floss or the fabric. As for any aromatherapy benefits, I daresay they’d have to be really, really strong for that, which just makes it worse.
I would like to try it once. Most of my cross stitching ends up framed, so I wouldn’t be able to smell them after I stitched anyways.
What happens if you don’t like the scent associated with a certain color? Would you substitute a more favorably scented color?
How do the scents blend?
I’m not sure this was too well thought-out!
I would not be interested in scented floss and I think its a silly idea. I do not have allergy problems but worry about chemicals released by this floss, and what about potential future damage to the finished product.
I agree with above, “I’m not sure this was too well thought-out!”
No, I don’t think I would be interested in scented floss. I don’t think I have a good sense of smell, so the scents wouldn’t do much for me, but I worry about some potential problems. What happens when you use different colors with different scents? How badly do the scents clash? Does the scent get obnoxiously strong when stored in a closed zip-loc bag like the bags I use to store my floss and working projects? Does the scent wash out when I pre-rinse my floss or when I wash the finished project? Does the scent linger on a stitched gift and then clash with the recipient’s use of the stitched item? How can I get rid of the scent when I want to give my stitched project to someone with allergies and asthma? I think I would just avoid this whole potential mess.
As I wrote to DMC, I have Multiple Chemical Sensitivity and would NEVER buy such a product. Furthermore, after many years of using DMC floss I would probably never again buy even the regular floss, as I would worry about it having been contaminated by the other. It’s a stupid idea!
I would never buy scented DMC or any scented stitching thread. I have problems with scents and migraines.
No way! This is the dumbest thing I’ve heard, stitching-wise, in ages. I predict a huge flop for DMC.
Like many of the other writers, I too have allergies and skin sensitivities. I would avoid using these scented flosses and I think the point about cross contamination is quite valid. Could one be assured that the scents wont carry to another manufacturer’s product when kept in a store? I’d say to DMC avoid this thought!
No, I wouldn’t buy the scented floss either. Though my allergies have improved since I was a youngster, I just don’t like the idea of the chemicals interacting with the material. Another thing is when you finish, you’ve still got the scent all over your fingers where you’ve been handling it. I don’t see this one lasting for very long.
My goodness! I can’t pick up containers that come from a certain chain of stores because of the chemicals they use to keep out bugs…. One touch and I begin to itch all over. I’d hate to think what would happen to me if I tried to work with these flosses! (Yes, I react strongly to perfumes, too.) ;(
I wanted to use these kits for small bags and such like, but on the whole I have been very disappointed with them. I bought four of the kits, and believe me there is no way they are going to contaminate anything.
The first kit I used was a chocolate cake. Hmm, well the dark brown was supposed to have a chocolate smell. Well mine didn’t, not so much as a teeny sniff of chocolate, and believe me as a chocolate addict I would have been able to sniff it out a kilometre away. One is supposed to stroke the thread to release the smell by the way. I stroked it to death, but still nothing.
The second kit, lavender this time did have some smell, at least it was when I took it out of the packet. However I haven’t even used it yet, I cross stitched the pot and am now doing the greenery, but the smell appears to have completely vanished from the lavender thread itself. It hasn’t contaminated the other threads either.
Obviously I haven’t tried the other two kits yet, but going by the first two I don’t hold out much chance of the smell lasting very long on either of them.
Soooo I don’t think there is any need for any of you to worry your pretty little heads about anything. As for the chemicals that create the alleged smell…….. you do all know that they use chemicals in the dyes don’t you? Not just DMC, but all the thread manufacturers.

I wouldn’t buy it or use it. I’m allergic to things that have a scent I can’t even smell. I use everything unscented.
Extremely stupid idea.
Good for stitching greetings cards for blind and visually impaired people.
