From the Forum: How Do You Organize Floss?
Friday April 24, 2009
Rosemary asks, "How do you organize your floss? I used to keep floss in the baggies on a ring but now I have an floss organizer box and wrap them around the floss winders (cardboard) I find it nice and neat."
Personally, I use several methods. I use the box method Rosemary describes for my DMC floss. I think I am up to fifteen boxes now. I use smaller boxes for projects using DMC.
For metallics and rayons, I make my own floss storage system. For small sets and my Threadworx flosses, I use some organizer drawers that work nicely.
My collection of Anchor floss is just jumbled in a box right now waiting for me to decide what method to use. I am leaning toward a set of organizer drawers because as soothing as I find winding floss on bobbins with my little bobbin winder, it is also time consuming!

Excellent topic, Connie! I’ve tried a number of methods over the years but what seems to work best for me is the aforementioned box method for all my DMCs, in numerical order (takes up two oversized boxes initially meant for art tools and part of a third — and I know I’m still missing some numbers!). Then for individual projects, I just use a large keyring with the specific bobbins on them — using the little punch hole that is at the top of the bobbins. Right now, I’m working on a Christmas stocking that only has about 15 colors in it, so it works well. I guess when I start my next Thomas Kinkade piece it will take more than one keyring
I also keep my Perle cottons, silks, overdyed flosses and other miscellany in separate organizers. For finished kits that used non-DMC thread, I keep them in a separate box so my kids can play with them, use for sewing buttons on, etc.
I don’t know if it’s because my Mom always did it, but I organize my floss using the box method as well. I remember as a little girl pulling her box out of the closet and admiring all the colors. I love the box method because everything is visible and easy to find. I’m not hunting through piles and piles of floss for a specific color. Whenever I’m working on a project I pull the colors I need and hang them on a binder ring.
