Do You Use a Thimble for Cross Stitch?

Monday May 18, 2009
Do you use a thimble when you Cross Stitch? My Grandmother Garmon used to be horrified when she saw me stitching without a thimble. She was a quilter and she was never without one. I tried to explain to her that tapestry needles were not as sharp as quilting needles, but she would just always hand me a thimble with a firm look on her face. I would try to use it while she was looking, but I never really mastered it.

Now I have callouses on my middle fingers (I stitch with both hands, especially when I am using a frame.)

As my stitching skills have advanced, I often find myself using other needles for projects. I have seriously considered breaking out the thimble that came with my emergency sewing kit.

How about you? Do you use a thimble when you stitch? Vote in the Poll at right.

If you have tips about protecting your hands while stitching, please use the Cross Stitch Tip Submission Form to share them with us.

I use those sticky pad thimbles sometimes and once you get used to the “feel” of them, they are quite useful. You have to wash your fingers well afterwards though!

I use the quilters leather thimble, to me it’s more comfortable than the metal ones, don’t irritate your skin and there’s no adhesive to wash off.

I, too, have used the adhesive finger “thimbles,” mainly when the tip of my first finger becomes pierced or the skin separates, which feels the same way. It’s usually a passing condition. Generally, I don’t like thimbles when stitching cross-stitch. They get in the way and bounce around!

I have tried thimbles and the adhesives. Neither worked for me, too cumbersome. Instead I buy “spot” bandaids and use them on my first three fingers whenever I sew.
