Poll - When Do You Complete Back Stitch?
Monday June 22, 2009
When stitching a large project that incorporates cross stitch and back stitch, I usually save the back stitch for last. This lets me check back over the entire project and ensure that I haven't missed any stitches.
Some stitchers, however, handle back stitch in a different manner. Instead of saving it all to the end, they do the back stitch as they complete a section of cross stitch. This method may be a little better in some ways. When I save the back stitch until the end, sometimes it seems as if I will never finish!

I’m working on a rather large and complcated Wedding Sampler, with metallic threads. From experience, I know they will be a little hard to wok with, so I’m leaving them till the end. Usually, I backstitch when I inish, but this time I’m wondering-should I do it as I go. The wedding is Dec 27 and I’ll need time to frame it. I acan only stitch for a short time as my eyes aren’t as good as they could be. So, if I work an hour a day, I hope to finish it by Thanksgiving. Wish me luck!

When doing a large project, I find I easier to backstitch as I finish an area so that something doesn’t get forgotten. Good Luck! Donna
When I do large projects with a lot of backstitching I do it as I go. Small projects I do after all the stitching is done.
When I was taight to cross stitch, I was taught to do it all at the end… But doing it as you go on large projects sure makes a lot of sense!
If I’m doing a large project, I do the back stitching as I finish a section. If its a small project I backstitch at the end. Also sometimes I’m anxious to see how something is going to look so I do some backstitching as I go.
I also do both…usually on small projects, I do it at the end. But, on large complicated designs, I do some of it as I go to see if it looks right before I start another area. It seems like it takes forever to wait til the end on the big stitchings!!
I usually back stitch at the end, but if I’m bored with the project, I’ll back stitch eyes or something that will give it some character and not look like a boring blob.
I like to back stitch, because it brings the picture to life.
