How Do You Protect Your Fabric?

I am working on a very large cross stitch project and using a tilted hoop. How do I avoid making the stitched I have completed not get fuzzy? I am concerned about pulling on the material to tighten everything up and also messing up the stitched that are under the top of the hoop.

How do you protect your fabric when you are using a hoop or frame? I use muslin or acid free tissue paper to help protect larger projects, but for smaller ones, I just try to use a hoop that is larger than my project size. I try to remember to remove my hoop when I am not working on the project, but I don't always do it.
