Do You Have Stitching Slumps?

Monday July 6, 2009
Do you ever have "stitching slumps"? Sometimes I do. Life gets hectic, I feel guilty if I stitch while the house is a wreck, and so on. Recently my father-in-law, Mr. Pat, was in the hospital and I didn't take more than 20 stitches the entire week.

Since then, I haven't gotten back into the habit of stitching every day. I need to clean up and straighten up and get back into my routine.

Do you have stitching slumps? Vote in the poll and let us know. Use the comments section to tell us how you got out of your slump.

Connie do not feel bad for being in a slump. I get into them at times, but usually that is when I tend to build up my stash of patterns, kits, threads and get creative. Alas, no stitching is done and sometimes slumps are hard to end. Chocolate helps, lol!!!

I haven’t been cross stitching very long, but I know this kind of thing happens with other crafts. Right now I’m in the middle of a quilting break. I just haven’t had the motivation to work on any new quilt blocks for a while, so I’ve been doing other crafts. Hopefully I’ll be able to go back to it soon.

I have slumps too. Mainly because my current project is just so big and thus progress is very slow and sometimes hardly noticeable. Right now I am just too busy to stitch. I am planning to do a small project (biscornu or scissor case) just to give me the good vibe of finishing something….

I’m in a stitching “slump,” too. I’m knitting a pair of socks! And now, I’m all excited about the sock pattern that I’m planning more socks! However, I did this past week pick up my “Let It Snow” picture and worked on it for an evening. I don’t want to let it go without finishing it. I’m very close. In the back-stitching and shading stitching now. I thought I was the only one that did this. I dropped cross-stitch all together for several years, gave away most of my stuff (except for my threads). Whan I finally realized that “everything is a process,” it clicked with me; and I understood why I had given up stitching … I expected too much too fast. Now, I understand that everything is a process that takes time. I did buy a kit over the holidays but it was of a special old truck and I’m saving that for the future. Hopefully, once my socks are done, I’ll be back….

I’ve been in one for some time now. Several years ago I had surgery for carpal tunnel problems and never quite got back into stitching again. I’ll do some for a couple of weeks and then put it away for a couple of months. Wish I could figure out a way to get myself motivated again.

I stitched for years and loved it. Then, like Sara, I had carpal tunnel which made me stop for a while. Then about 2 years ago I had a new granddaughter and started stitching again and saw so many patterns that I just had to stitch and stitch. Now I am in the middle of one “Now I Lay Me….. ” and can’t seem to finish, Guess I’m in the “slump” too.
Maybe writing this will help me UNSLUMP and get it finished before she’s 10! She’s 2-1/2
now..

That’s a good idea… Why don’t we trade ideas for “unslumping”? Anybody got one?

My “problem” is I’m preparing for a visit from my husband’s son, and this plus other day-to-day problem-solving that I do taking care of an elderly husband, leaves me little free time. So when I get this time, I use it in other ways.
But, knitting is not as relaxing to me as stitching. I think I will try to set aside 30 minutes today for stitching. ….

The only time I got into a stitching slump is when I broke my wrist. I was LOST. As soon as I could – (about three weeks after surgery) I was able to do easy – 14 count Aida and one colour floss only – I invented all sorts of patterns !

UNSLUMPING was easy once my husband’s son arrived … I was so nervous that I took up my stitching with a vengeance and now I’m racing to the finish line on snowman picture “Let It Snow”! I was a good hostess, but, let me put it this way, it wasn’t always easy! Thank goodness for cross-stitch! Allowed me to detach with dignity!

I haven’t experienced a stitching slump in a long time. It might be partly because I see stitching as my refuge, and if I don’t feel like doing it, then what would I do? :)

I’m in a big slump right now. I am almost finished with Kimo and just can’t seem to motivate myself to work on it. I have been working on it since last September and I would really like to finish. I think being able to spend time outdoors plays a big part in it. I work on a latch hook pillow while I am sitting in the screen house. Ah well maybe tomorrow.

The biggest “slumps ” that get me are housework slumps. I can think of a million reasons TO stitch, inventory my “stash”, research availability of patterns, search thrift stores of old stitchery magazines or kits, etc. but I just can’t gt motivated to sweep and dust.
Fortunately I live with an artist who doesn’t seem to notice. Our home is a wall to wall studio.
