I have some odds and ends skeins of floss with no label, left-over floss from kits, and other projects collected in a craft box. I sorted them by color - good old MR. Roy G. Biv. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet for those of you who don't know. Neutrals are in their own little section.
I use these odds and ends of floss for various things. I stitched one of my favorite projects with them, in fact. I wondered - what do you do with your extra floss, if you don't plan to stitch with it? I collected a few ideas from various sources for Alternate Uses for Embroidery Floss, Thread, and Other Fibers, but I want to know what you do too.
Read the ideas and then share your own.

A local needleworker friend asks her students to collect their scrap floss while doing projects and throughout the year. Then at Christmas put the floss in clear Christmas ornament bulbs. Very original concept. Beautiful color mixes.
I was an avid X-stitcher at one time. I bought the small drawer hardware cabinets and put my thread in those drawers numerically. I still have the 3 of them and all my threads. I may eventually figure out a way to see well enough to stitch again. I would love to finish the Norman Rockwell scenes that I have started.
In all of my rambling, I forgot to tell you what I did with the leftover floss. I just put it back in the correct drawer. Some of the drawers have three colors in them. This worked really well for me.When I started a project, I would get all the floss I needed and put it in my working case.
Dragon My Needle has a scrap SAL http://dragonmyneedle.blogspot.com/2009/01/progress-and-new-sal.html
Also, can use thread scraps for stuffing small items.
I’ve only stitched a couple of kits, so I don’t have much in the way of scrap floss. So no plans for it at this point.
I always find a girlscout troop needing someone to teach cross stitching. I make packages of spare floss, material, and a needle with a small pattern to stitch. It is always fun!
I also save my floss and fill plastic balls at Christmas or sometime make a Birthday glow ball filled with floss.
I save my floss and then use it for writing names and dates on baby or wedding announcements. I’ve also used it to stitch quotes or borders on cross stitch pieces that I’ve given away as gifts. I think people appreciate that added personal touch.
