Best Movies and Shows To Watch While Stitching

Follow me on:

One of my twitter friends, @garzai38 and I were discussing my new favorite movie, Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont (compare prices) a lovely movie about a young man who "adopts" an elderly lady as his honorary grandmother. She mentioned that it sounded like a good movie to stitch to and I agreed - after you watch it the first time, that is.

Our conversation spurred me to think about some of my other favorite movies and shows to watch while stitching. Here's a few from my list:
  1. The Princess Bride (compare prices) - I have seen it so many times I don't need to watch it! This movie catches my sense of humor perfectly. It is sort of a litmus test for me. If you don't get it, we might not be compatible. (My DH hasn't watched it yet, but he got a pass because he thought Andy Kaufman was funny and he understood my Muppet obsession.)
  2. Gladiator (compare prices) - I do glance up now and again to look at the lovely cinematography, but the music is lovely to stitch to during most of the movie. There's some pretty good action in this movie too.
  3. Rent - I have practically memorized this musical and will put the video in just for the music and dialogue. It's a tear-jerker though so stitching goes out the window a few times as I watch. It's good to take a break now and then, right?
  4. Sound of Music - Have you noticed I like music? This movie even has it in the title. The movie has been a part of my life (it came out the year before I was born). Some really special kids I used to babysit loved this movie too. It guaranteed me two VHS tapes worth of peace and quiet. For that alone, it has to be in my top five favorite movies ever!
  5. Babylon 5 - The graphics are a little cheesy sometimes, but the story is funny, compelling, and well-written. I get a lot of stitching done when watching episodes, but I do have to look up to see Bruce Boxleitner when he is onscreen - that's my kind of eye-candy. I gifted myself the DVD box-set last Mother's Day. (I said my "doghter" Girlie got it for me, as you may recall - who can argue with that?)
Honorable mention - My favorite movie that includes stitching as a theme is The Heiress for which Olivia de Havilland won Best Actress. Olivia de Havilland's character does needlepoint and her skill is part of the plot. The movie, which also stars Montgomery Clift, is based on the novel Washington Square by Henry James. I am not going to divulge more of the plot because you should watch the movie or read the book! (compare prices)

I also have a list of movies or shows to ‘craft to’…musicals are a great choice! I love crafting to “moulin rouge”…have to look up for the elephant love song between Nichole & Ewan…it’s just so magical! The Nightmare Before Christmas… pure genious & imagination! Breakfast at Tiffanys… you cannot go wrong with this classic… and ‘moon river’ gives me goosebumps!

I’m usually stitching in front of my laptop because my patterns are on there, so I’ll watch the Rachel Maddow video podcast or tv shows that are available online. Right now I’m halfway through RuPaul’s Drag Race. :)

This may sound odd… but I watch true crime stuff, like those MSNBC shows and American Justice etc, because I really only have to hear the narration to know what’s going on… no watching required. Lol… murder and crafting.

I like to watch series that are fun, but don’t require too much attention to follow the plot. Privileged was a great one, before it got canceled. Other faves include Ugly Betty, Desperate Housewives, and Gossip Girl.

The absolute worst to stitch to — horror movies. Without looking at the screen or being involved in the suspense, it’s just a lot of screaming.

I too like “Princess Bride” as well as “Ladies in Lavender” and “The Long, Long Trailer” to stitch along with. I like listening to reruns of some of my favorite TV mystery shows, sort of like listening to the old-time radio mystery shows.

I like to stitch while watching my favorite baseball team, the San Francisco Giant’s, baseball games. I have yet to make it to a Stitch N Pitch game, but I hope to one year.

Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is 6 hours of stitching fun. It is a great inspiration to see the characters stitching various little things and it does keep you motivated.

We agree on The Princess Bride. My all-time fave is Jean Shepherd’s “Christmas Story”. Just listening makes me laugh.

Normally, I’m stitching at night in front of the TV with my DH by my side, so that means no chick flicks! Luckily, we both really enjoy action movies. Though I talked him into watching Othello with me the other night and he was amazed at how much he liked it.
