I have several "rules" I follow when stitching. First and foremost is "Keep your hands clean!" If I touch food, the dog, or even if I scratch my nose, I wash my hands. I keep moist wipes handy if I am not close to a sink when I am stitching. (I am almost like Adrian Monk about having clean hands, I admit.)
Another hard and fast rule is that all my stitches face one direction. I might mix it up just for fun on a stitch doodle, but when I am stitching a kit or a pattern, I don't toy with my stitches. Uniformity in stitch direction and tension is key to having a nice-looking finished project.
If you are just getting started with stitching, then reading my Cross Stitch Rules will help you finesse your projects. For stitchers who have been at it a little longer, we'd love for you to share your own Cross Stitch rules. What you learned from experience may help save another stitchers time, money, or even their entire project. Don't delay - share your tips today.
