Cross Stitch Book Reviews

Overview of Chapters:

Chapter One: Europe

The European collection is comprised of smaller designs which would be appropriate to combine into samplers or stitch as borders or small ornaments.

Chapter Two: North America

In this chapter a large American Sampler is accompanied by many smaller motifs that cover the continent from Canada to California and Quebec to Mexico. Groupings of motifs about Washington, DC even Elvis designs are included. One of my favorite designs is a skier flying high after a jump (page 39).

Chapter Three: South America

A large pattern with parrots of all colors and sizes is the highlight of this chapter which also includes many motifs that represent all aspects of the continent.

Chapter Four: Africa

Rich with colors, the designs from this chapter range from a large image of a young African girl with birds and giraffes to a small design of a lion. African and Egyptian samplers are included.

Chapter Five: Asia

The most detailed design in the book, a Japanese portrait entitled "Eastern Promise" is found in this chapter. Specialty threads are used to create detail on the kimono of the young woman in the picture. Additional designs in the Asia collection include Indian, Chinese, Japanese buildings and people. A Taj Mahal Sampler uses whole cross stitches and back stitch only to create a lovely design.

Chapter Six: Australia

The diversity of culture from "Down Under" is well represented in the chapter. A "Wonders of Australia" sampler incorporates motifs from natural and cultural elements. From kangaroos to duck-billed platypuses, the many unusual animals from the continent are charted for stitching.
Included in the book are basic cross stitch directions and many ideas for finishing the designs. Two pages of finishing instructions include how to make a bell pull, sachet, phone pouch, and other cross stitch enhanced items. Compare prices for other books by Lesley Teare:
