Learn to stitch a four-sided stitch. On the front of the fabric, a square is formed. On the back - a cross stitch.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: Varies with Stitching Skill

Here's How:

  1. Begin the four-sided stitch by bringing the needle and floss up through the fabric at 1.

  2. Complete the first side of the square by taking the floss down at 2.

  3. The second side of the square begins at point 3.

  4. Complete the second side of the square by inserting the needle at 1.

  5. The third side of the square begins at 4 and ends at 2.

  6. The final side of the square begins at point 3 and ends at point 4.

Tips:

  1. To stitch multiple four-sided stitches, stitch the squares side-by-side, skipping the existing side in the formation of the next stitch. After the initial stitch, stitches that follow will have three steps instead of four.

  2. Ideally, the needle should stay on the top of the fabric at all times. Use the sewing method to stitch this stitch.

When stitching on linen, pull the stitches tight to create a lace-like effect.

  3. Use four-sided stitch in samplers, borders, or to replace cross stitches in small designs.
