Learn to stitch a zig zag stitch, a cross stitch variation that is shaped like a bow-tie. The zig zag stitch forms a cross stitch with upright straight stitches on each side. The instructions below are for a single zig zag stitch. When stitching a row of zig zag stitches, complete the first pass of each stitch from left to right and then return, stitching the second pass of each stitch from right to left. For columns, complete each zig zag stitch individually, just as with cross stitches.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: Varies

Here's How:

  1. Bring the threaded needle up at A and stitch an upright stitch from A to B.

  2. Bring the threaded needle up at C and stitch a half stitch from C to A.

  3. Bring the needle up at D and stitch a second upright stitch from D to C, completing the first pass of the stitch.

  4. For the second pass, stitch a second straight stitch from D to C. The stitch should be completed in the same holes in the Aida or between the same fabric threads on Linen. Some space is shown between the stitches in the diagram for differentiation, but the stitches will actually lay right beside one another.

  5. Stitch a half stitch from D to B, completing the cross stitch in the center of the stitch.

  6. To complete the zig zag stitch, stitch an upright stitch from A to B. Once again, the stitch should be completed in the same holes in the Aida or between the same fabric threads on Linen. Some space is shown between the stitches in the diagram for differentiation, but the stitches will actually lay right beside one another. Note that if you are stitching with one strand of floss, there will be have two upright strands with a single-stranded cross stitch in the center.

  7. Variation: Complete the first pass of the stitch in one color and the second pass in a contrasting or complimentary color.

  8. Practice this stitch with the free Zig Zag Welcome pattern.

Tips:

  1. This is one cross stitch variation that looks great stitched over a single square of Aida. You can also stitch it over more squares, depending on the project you are creating.
