To learn how to stitch a velvet stitch, you will need
  • a small piece of Aida fabric,
  • a tapestry needle,
  • several strands of embroidery floss,
  • a hoop and
  • scissors to cut the floss.

Begin the velvet stitch using a waste knot. Start the velvet stitch with a loop. Bring the threaded needle up at point A, indicated by the red dot in figure 1. Make a loop and insert the needle at point B, indicated by the blue dot. Use your thumbnail to hold the loop or use a pin to keep the loop from being pulled straight as you stitch. The size of the loop is up to you. I use the squares of Aida as a guide to keep my loops consistent. I generally make my loops 2-3 squares long.

Note: Although the velvet stitch in this diagram is stitched over more than one square of Aida fabric, a velvet stitch may be stitched over one or more fabric squares, just like a cross stitch.
