Name of Company and Designer:

Susan Myers is the Cross Stitch Designer behind Acorn House Designs. Although Susan has only been designing for a short time, her designs already resonate with many stitchers. She offers both Cross Stitch and Punchneedle patterns.

How Susan Learned to Stitch:

Susan explains, "My mom, who is not personally into arts and crafts, none-the-less taught me embroidery stitches with some old iron-on patterns and floss she still had from when she was a young girl. (She was tired of hearing me complain that I was bored!) I was about eight. I taught myself after that.

My first cross stitch was the ring pillow for my wedding at age 23. After that I was hooked (on cross stitch -okay- and my husband!)"

How Susan Got Her Start Designing:

Susan had to give up her previous endeavor for physical reasons. "I made custom sugar-paste flowers and other decorations for local brides and bakeries. I also taught the techniques and competed in the huge wedding cake competitions that are held annually in Tulsa, Oklahoma. My arms had to quit, but my mind couldn't. I loved designing and creating. So, I put that to work with my other passion - Cross Stitch."

Dominant Themes:

Susan uses her sense of humor in her designs. "I had to give up something I really loved and was really good at. Turning to designing cross stitch helped keep me from bumming out about that. I felt like having a laugh. I will be turning more toward samplers and specialty stitches, but humor can show up anywhere."

Finding Her Style:

"Not having many designs under my belt, I'd say that my style is still evolving. As a stitcher, my personal favorites are specialty stitches, 1 over 1, and really detailed, complicated designs. But, I felt I should get my designing feet wet first before diving right in over my head. I intend to keep a focus on appealing to the young stitcher, but I will have to delve into more complex works or I’m going to bust. The company may end up looking like it has several designers."

Sources of Inspiration:

Where does Susan find inspiration? She answers, "Where don't I? You never know what will trigger an idea. You just have to write it down before you forget it!"

Special Design:

Susan has "... a soft spot for Good with Thread. It's a saying of mine that I've used throughout the years when someone asks about my patience for tedious projects. It seems to have resonated with other stitchers, and that makes me feel good."

Presentation of Designs:

The Cross Stitch designs come as chart packs. Punchneedle designs come stamped on fabric or as iron on transfers. Susan's designs are available at needlework shops or through Acorn House Designs.

Stitching Level Required:

Most of the designs are pretty basic, but Susan plans to add more challenging patterns eventually.
