Summary of Company History: In 1854, Christian Permin started Permin embroideries in Copenhagen. At first, the main product was embroidery, especially home decor items such as monogrammed curtains, chair sets, bed linen and towels.

During World War I, slow sales encouraged Permin to develop new products such as traced embroidery and canvases to reach new customers. Before charts were developed, customers would copy ready made work from dealers.

In 1919, a move to closer to the center of Copenhagen, was accompanied by the start of a design workshop. In the 1930s, Permin started to export embroideries to Sweden. During the Second World War and the years after, the subsidiaries in Sweden and Norway were developed.

In 1953 the first color chart, printed color by color, was made. The procedure was extremely expensive, as you can imagine. In recent history, two final subsidiaries were founded in the Netherlands (1974) and in Germany (1992). With modern technology, all charts are computerized, but are created and stitched by employees of the company.
