Transform a CD with Cross Stitch

By Connie G. Barwick, About.com

Do you hate to throw damaged or promo CDs away? Transform that trash into treasure. Follow these simple steps to transform a CD with a Cross Stitch design.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: Varies with Stitching Skill

Here's How:

  1. Stitch a small Cross Stitch design such as this Heart Diamond Cross Stitch pattern on plastic canvas, perforated paper or Cross Stitch fabric . Choose from other free patterns or select a design from your Cross Stitch Pattern collection. If you stitch the design on fabric, check to see that the finished design size will be slightly smaller than the CD. Designs stitched on plastic canvas or perforated paper may overlap slightly.

  2. If you stitched the design on fabric, launder the design.

Cut away the excess material from around the design. You may want to cut a piece of acid-free paper or craft foam to cover the back of the CD.

Clean the CD with window cleaner and dry.

  3. Glue the Cross Stitch Design to the CD. Use an acid-free glue designed to bond different types of material. Take care that you do not use so much glue that it oozes out or through the material.

I used a spray adhesive, applying it to the back of the design and then pressing it to the CD. Whatever type of glue you use, be sure to follow proper safety procedures.

  4. The finished design may be displayed in several ways:
    • Add several pieces of magnetic tape for a large refrigerator magnet.
    • Make three CD Cross Stitch Treasures and hang them on a dowel or coat hanger for a mobile.
    • Dress up a cork-board message center.
    • Create a unique card by writing a message on the back and sending it off to a friend in a CD mailer.
    • Hang the CD in a window as a sun-catcher.

What You Need:

  • Stitched Cross Stitch Design
  • Old or unused CD
  • Craft Glue
  • Paper or Foam for Backing
