Though a wide variety of embroidery flosses are available, Six-Strand Embroidery Floss is commonly used for Cross Stitch. The floss, sold in skeins, is cut into short lengths for stitching.
Strands are separated and the number of strands selected for stitching are threaded into a tapestry needle. The exact number of strands used to stitch a cross stitch depends on the fabric count.
It is important to note that there are many brands of six-strand embroidery floss, each with a unique system of numbering colors. Floss lines by DMC, Anchor, J& Coats, and DFN are often used in cross stitch kits and patterns.
