Should Floss Be Rinsed Before Stitching?

By Connie G. Barwick, About.com

Question: Should Floss Be Rinsed Before Stitching?
I was getting ready to start a new project and one of my friends asked me if I was going to "prepare" my floss by rinsing it. What did she mean?
Answer: Most regular embroidery floss is colorfast. Due to changes made to make the dying process more environmentally friendly, some colors, however, may bleed slightly. Dark colors and reds are especially prone to slight bleeding.

To test the floss, soak a small amount in a basin. If the dye escapes into the water, then rinse the floss under cool water until the water runs clear.

Some stitchers add a small amount of salt or vinegar to the rinse water. Other stitchers wait and rinse the project after the stitching is complete.

For specialty fibers and flosses, follow the manufacturers instructions for preparing floss. Most over dyed floss, for example, should not be washed at all.
