Thread the tapestry needle with the second color of embroidery floss. Use a waste knot to start the stitch or secure the floss under the back of the existing line of back stitch.

Bring the floss up exactly half-way under the first back stitch. Do not pierce the stitch. Bring the floss out from under the stitch toward the top. Then, insert the needle under the second back stitch as shown in the image above and draw the floss under it.
