The Bottom Line

Want some aromatherapy for your stitching projects? Soak offers three lightly scented verions of their product. If, like me, you are not a fan of strongly scented washes and detergents, then Soak is perfect for you because an unscented version is available as well. The product is quite useful for hand-washables, including fabrics and stitchery projects.

Guide Review - Soak Detergent for Delicates

I have a vast collection of Cross Stitch fabric. I keep an eye out for fabric where ever I go. I think the most unusual place I have purchased fabric was a hardware store in Utah - yes you read that right, a hardware store with a craft section. I think the fabric had been there awhile because it had a definite odor. A musty odor that was far from pleasant.

I wondered how I was going to combat this odor, and then I heard about Soak, a new detergent used for lingerie and other hand washables. I decided to test it out on my fabric. I used the citrus scent first and it worked wonderfully.

The detergent has a low suds formula, so no rinsing is required. The fabric feels a little stiff at first, but after drying there is little residue left. I will probably rinse my fabric next time, however. This will mean losing the citrus scent, but as long as the musty smell is gone, that is find with me.

There was a little color bleed (the fabric I tested is medium blue), but this did result in fading.

If you decided to use Soak on a stitched project, be sure to do a color test first. Stitch a bit of each color floss on a small piece of your fabric and soak it - if it bleeds a little, it will be fine. If a lot of bleeding occurs, you may want to seek another cleaning method for the project, especially if the flosses are not colorfast.
