  1. Begin by stitching a small Cross Stitch motif such as this Striped Heart on 10 or 14-count plastic canvas.
  2. Cut away the excess canvas, leaving only the design.
  3. Use spray adhesive or glue to attach felt to the back of the design, or leave it as is.
  4. Attach a pin back to the design. Find adhesive pin backs in the jewelry-making section of your local craft store, or use "invisible" nylon quilting thread to sew the pin back to the motif (shown in the second image).
You could also attach the motif directly onto a child's garment and snip it off before laundering instead of using a pin.
