One common knot that forms when stitching a cross stitch is the loop knot. This knot is caused when the floss twists and tangles. Avoid this knot by using shorter lengths of floss when stitching and frequently allowing needle and floss to dangle and untwist.

To untangle this knot, place your needle inside the loop as shown in the enhanced photo. Gently pull the floss against the needle to loosen the knot.

The second photo shows the undone knot, ready to pull the rest of the way out.

If the knot will not untangle quickly, cut it out, secure the end of the floss and start a new piece of floss. The floss will be damaged and frayed if a great deal of effort is required to pull the knot out.
