One difficulty some stitchers have is that the rails in common wooden needlework frames are too short for large projects. Get around this problem by purchasing long wooden dowels that are will fit in the side holders of the frame.

If you have difficulty finding a dowel that is exactly the right size, choose one that is slightly smaller than the opening in the frame side holder and then use toothpicks as shims to make the dowel fit tightly. Add more toothpicks as needed when you loosen the fabric in the frame to move it forward.
