How to Deal With Fabric Shortages

By Connie G. Barwick, About.com

Question: How to Deal With Fabric Shortages
One of the worst things that can happen to a stitcher is fabric shortage. This happens when the fabric is cut too small for the project, or the project was not centered properly and the design does not fit properly. The best way to deal with this is to avoid it, but what if you are too far into the project to start over?
Answer: If possible, alter the design so that it will fit. If the pattern is a sampler, leave out a few rows or lines.

If the design fits, but there is little fabric on the edge for framing, add a band of fabric to the edge as a border.

It may be possible to add fabric of the same type and color to the edge, but it will be obvious that a strip has been added. It might be better to do this than to toss an entire project out just because of a few rows of stitching.

Avoid fabric shortages by calculating the fabric needed for the design, adding several inches to each side for framing or finishing, and then recalculating your measurements once more, carefully cutting your fabric, and paying particular attention to starting your design properly so that it will all fit on the fabric.
