Lacemaker2004 explains how she avoids wrinkles in her finished projects. She writes:
"Hi, I tend to do large projects that contain embellishments and metallics and I tend to take a long time to complete a project so they sometimes get a bit dusty, wrinkled or grimy feeling by the time I finish them. Since they have metallics I can't iron them but discovered the following for flattening the project.
Before I add the
beads and embellishment, I wash the project (first making sure everything is color-safe at the beginning of the project). Then I lay it out smoothly on a large thick bath towel. I gently roll the towel and project up and gently press to release the water into the towel. I let it sit for about an hour and then using a skirt hanger (the
ones with the clips) I hang the project from my shower rod and gently smooth it flat by tugging on the corners to make it square and passing my (clean) hands over (like I'm praying which I am each time I do this!) I have found this takes care of 95% of the wrinkles.
For the other wrinkles, I use an iron to smooth out the surrounding fabric but not the stitching. The other thing I've done when a wrinkle was stubborn is to dampen it and hold the piece flat, and use a hair dryer set to cool to blow dry. I've also noticed that using the shower rod keeps me aware of the pressure I'm putting on the piece. If I was pulling too hard the rod would come down. The rod
also allows me to have air flowing completely around the project."
