When gridding fabric, I take a different colour of thread to use for a vertical and horizontal line down the center lines of the fabric, as I have found that very rarely do charts actually start on a line of the ten by ten grid, they are usually one or two squares to one side or the other of either the vertical or the horizontal line of the grid.
I do these lines first, then referring to my chart, I start the grid lines in my second colour. This ensures that my chart and grid match accurately and doesn't drive me bats trying to find the right spot when it could be out by several squares. This is especially required if using older charts, as they are extremely rare to find actually starting at a cross of two 10 by 10 grid lines in the chart.
