Cross Stitch Tip - Pipsqueek's Stain Removal Tip

Tips for Easy Stain Removal

By Connie G. Barwick, About.com

Pipsqueek shares how she removes stains from Aida fabric.

She writes, "Even if you have started your stitching I have found these two products to be safe. When washing a finished piece of stitchery I use Johnson & Johnson's baby soap in my water as a detergent. Simply rub a wet bar of J&J's baby soap through your hands and then rinse it off in the water you are going to use for washing. If you have light stains, e.g. hoop marks, use the corner of the soap and rub lightly on the stain and then rub gently with your fingers until the stain is removed then hand wash normally.

For worse stains, e.g. permanent marker or ball point pen, I use Preen Vanish. It's available from most supermarkets. Simply spray the Preen Vanish on damp fabric and leave it for 1-3 minutes, give it a gentle rub with your fingers and hand wash normally. This can be repeated, with care.

I also use an old baby or soft bristled toothbrush on areas that have not been stitched on. You must be very gentle when rubbing areas that have been stitched.

Note: Representatives of Preen Vanish warn that the product is not recommended for use on embroidery projects, especially those that are not colorfast. If the stain won't come out with mild detergent, however, it may be worth the risk of losing some color to attempt to salvage your stitching!
